Job Opportunities at COLA

Research Scientist

The Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA; www.iges.org) is pleased to announce the availability of a position as Research Scientist at COLA. We seek highly productive applicants who are capable of working in a multi-disciplinary team research environment and conducting leading-edge original research. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to a national research center aimed toward understanding and predicting the variability and predictability of climate from days to decades.

COLA, located in Calverton, Maryland, is a unique institution that allows Earth scientists from atmospheric, oceanic and hydrological backgrounds to work closely together on interdisciplinary research related to variability and predictability of Earth's climate on intra-seasonal to decadal time scales. The scientific premise for research at COLA is that there is a predictable element of the Earth's current climate that makes it possible to accurately forecast climate variations. While the chaotic nature of the global atmosphere is known to impose a limit on the predictability of the state of the climate at a given instant, the hypothesis behind COLA's research is that there is predictability in the midst of chaos, and that accurate climate forecasts with lead times longer than the inherent limit of deterministic predictability are possible. COLA scientists have access to a suite of state-of-the-art National climate models as well as high-end computing and analysis and visualization facilities dedicated to the research activities of the Center.

The COLA appointment can be made jointly with a tenure track faculty appointment in the Climate Dynamics department of the College of Sciences at George Mason University (GMU; climate.gmu.edu) to begin in Spring 2008. The rank of the faculty appointment is open, based on qualifications. The Climate Dynamics department is a focal point for research and graduate education in climate science at GMU. A companion position announcement has been issued by GMU.

COLA is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer committed to diversity at all levels – all applicants for this position will be considered solely on the basis of qualifications, without regard to race, gender, religion, national origin, age, or disability.

A Ph.D. in meteorology, physical oceanography or related fields is required, and research expertise, demonstrated by a suitable publication record, in intraseasonal to interannual or longer period climate predictability and climate prediction is desired. To apply, please send a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interests, and the contact information for at least three references to:

Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies
4041 Powder Mill Road, Suite 302

The position will remain open until filled, but applications received before 31 January 2008 will receive priority.

Post-Doctoral Scientist

The Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA) is seeking applicants for a post-doctoral position in regional climate modeling.

The successful candidate will conduct dynamic downscaling of the NCEP CFS coupled seasonal forecasts for both the North American and the South American monsoons.   This project will also involve assessing the potential for dynamic downscaling of seasonal forecasts for hydrological forecasts for some of the major river basins in the domain. Expertise in either the North American or the South American monsoon is preferred.   A Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences, hydrology or a related discipline is required. Familiarity with coding and running regional atmospheric models, programming experience in FORTRAN and familiarity with UNIX are required. Please send an application with curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, and arrange to send three reference letters to:
